Freemasonry is an age-old fraternal society. It’s an organization that dates back to the Middle Ages, and its members wear this Masonic symbol to show their recognition of the institution.
The History of Freemasonry
Although the first Masonic Grand Lodge was founded in England in 1717, Freemasonry has actually been in existence for a very long time.
Freemasonry itself is not mysterious, but its origins include oaths and gestures used since the Middle Ages, which have led many to believe that Freemasonry is extremely mysterious.
The Meaning of Masonic Symbols
A square and a set of circular rules are the main symbols of Freemasonry. In the early days, the square symbolized the direction of behavior and the circle represented the rules of conduct. However, it’s been observed that in addition to this symbol, the letter “G” is placed in the center of the symbol. Most people believe that this letter represents God, while others believe that it represents geometry.
This Masonic symbol has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Nowadays, Masons still maintain the tradition and the most common way to wear these symbols is to combine them with jewelry, especially necklaces, rings and brooches, which are the most widely used Masonic jewelry.
Masonic Jewelry
The most common types of Masonic Jewelry are necklaces and rings. For members of a Masonic Lodge, it’s common to wear a Masonic ring to identify oneself as a Mason. The significance of wearing Masonic jewelry is that it symbolizes a sense of identification with the organization. In the Middle Ages, it was initially worn by the more important members of the organization, such as royalty, nobility and officials, and was made of precious metals, enamel, or gemstones. Only later did other members follow the trend, and the materials and designs became simpler.
What to Consider When Wearing Masonic Jewelry
With the long history of Freemasonry, there have been many controversies regarding the wearing of Masonic jewelry. In particular, there are many rules and traditions pertaining to the wearing of rings. Here are just a few specific examples, though I’m not a member, so please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
★ If you are a new member, the symbol points should be facing towards you. This represents your recognition of and commitment to tradition.
★ As a senior member, you can have the symbol points facing away from yourself. This expresses your identification with the organization and also with yourself.
